Sally Malay mine is located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, 240km south of Kunnunurra.

This project involved the construction of a Tailings Storage Facility in steep and rocky terrain involving the massive movement and placement of material.  The upstream footprint was swathed in geotextile, loaded with rock waste and then covered with armour rockfill. 

Works involved:

  • Clearing of 19.5ha and stockpile vegetation;
  • Stripping of 19,500m3 topsoil – stockpiled separately;
  • Excavation of 15,200m3 embankment foundation;
  • Excavation of 4,500m3 seepage cut off;
  • Borrow, moisture condition, transport, place and compact 445,000m3 clay and rock waste borrow material; and
  • Supply and place 16,000m2 geotextile
