The construction of Stage 1 of the Tailings Storage Facility is one several projects undertaken by Brierty to upgrade the infrastructure at Telfer.  The works involved approximately 1,000,000m3 of bulk earthworks.

Brierty being responsible for the placement, compaction, testing and profiling of Zone 1 material.  Zone 1 being the impermeable ‘skin’ of the Tailings Storage Facility.  Approximately 500,000m3 Zone 1 material was placed up in 250mm lifts with one nuclear density test required by 250m3 of material placed.

Newcrest Mining supplied and delivered all material in the construction of the dam, the majority being Zone 2 material, which provided backing for Zone 1.  Zone 2 was predominantly ‘paddock-dumped’, levelled and wheel rolled.  Preconditioned Zone 1 material was delivered to site and dumped in set areas, it was then picked up using scrapers and placed.
